How to Play Pontoon

Pontoon, also known as Spanish 21, was created in Britain, and while it is very similar to blackjack, there are a few rules that make it different. Below are some tips to help familiarize yourself with the game of Pontoon.

The Game

The biggest difference between Pontoon and blackjack is that, in Pontoon, both of the dealer's cards are dealt face down. This makes it more challenging for the player to analyze the dealer's hand. Another downside of Pontoon? If you and the dealer tie, the dealer wins. The benefits of Pontoon include the 2-to-1 payout, as well as a 2-to-1 payout for the 5-card trick. The Pontoon allows you to count an ace and 10 after splitting.

The Rules

Pontoon uses 4 to 8 Spanish decks, with each deck consisting of 48 cards. The 48 cards are a regular deck of 52 without the 4 tens. Removing these tens from the deck is advantageous to the dealer. After placing a bet in Pontoon, each player receives 2 cards face up and the dealer gets 2 cards face down. If the dealer has 21, all bets are lost. Players can hit at any point during Pontoon, even after doubling down, and players may only double on 9 to 11. A player's 21 wins immediately and players are also allowed to take a "late surrender."

Hands

A 5-card 21 pays 3 to 2, a 6-card 21 pays 2 to 1, a 7-or-more-card 21 pays 3 to 1. A 6-7-8 or 7-7-7 of mixed suits pay 3 to 2, if it is of the same suit, it pays 2 to 1, and if it is of spades it pays 3 to 1. Bonuses are not paid after doubling in any of the above hands. Practice Makes Perfect

As with any game, practice makes perfect. The more times you play Pontoon, the quicker you'll pick up on the rules and the quicker you'll be able to try out new strategies.

Pontoon is a game of strategy, just like blackjack. Knowing the rules and the odds of your hand can help to increase your chances of winning.
